In My Own World 12.00 (
Book)
This fantastic adventure takes children on a journey around the globe. Benefitting The National Autism Association, In My Own World makes the world of autistic children come to life.
REVIEW:
Michelle Weisen’s In My Own World was designed for special needs children with a shiny surface that can be wiped down, the spiral binding, and the thick pages. Her book is an excellent book for young children! The story line allows your child’s imagination to run wild, especially because of the photographs she has illustrated. In the book, she uses the outline of young girl and boy, with no distinct features, encouraging kids to put themselves in the storybook… literally! It is a wonderful book that will make kids feel at ease and a sense of enchantment as they dive into the deep sea with a vibrant octopus,, soar towards the starry sky, or discover a sunken treasure.

When Sister Bear receives a locket for her birthday with the Golden Rule inscribed on it, she wonders what the verse means. And although Mama Bear explains it, it isn’t until she befriends a lonely newcomer at school that she understands what the rule looks like in action.
REVIEW:
The Golden Rule is a great book that highlights many topics kids face in school and in their social groups. It's a great book to show children never to exclude anyone or treat anyone less than how you would want to be treated. It shows them to be conscious of they treat others. This is an important book to have to show kids, in a very entertaining, fun and relatable way, that we should treat everyone equally!

REVIEW:
This Bernstein Bear Book is a great way of showing children the importance of “togetherness,” and the importance of family. The book illustrated the story of Noah’s Ark in a fun and imaginative way. This book showed children that church, God, and his teaching are not boring, they are interesting, exciting, and magical. They can be fun to learn about. So, if you have little ones who resist going to church, this is the book for you!

REVIEW:
A very good positive and motivational book that shows kids that even when things don't go as they planned, there is always something positive that creeps out of the shadows. The Bernstein Bears Say Their Prayers! 3.99 (
DVD)
Although saying bedtime prayers is a habit in the Bear household, Brother Bear isn’t sure why they do it. But when he sees a friend on his baseball team praying at the game, he decides to try it himself. Things don’t work out as he expects though, and Brother Bear learns that although prayers are always answered, they aren’t always answered as we expect.
REVIEW: This is a great book to show children the importance of prayer! Bernstein uses great situations like a baseball game, to relate to the kids about the themes about which he writes. He shows children's realistic and natural reactions to certain situations and provides a realistic and meaningful way to deal with those emotions, feelings , and predicaments. A great book for teaching your children about the importance of prayer and how they really do get answered!

A Wildlife Rescue Ranger badge is included with every book.
REVIEW:
Wildlife Rescue Rangers educates children about wildlife rehabilitation and comes with an eco iron-on patch. This book I such a great and fun resource for kids to learn about the common wildlife around their area including, squirrels, ducks, rabbits, and much more. Weisen even teaches kids how they can help clean up the environment and protect the animals that make up the world around us. She provides incredible and interesting pictures for your little one to follow, and gives all of the key points on what a wildlife rescue ranger needs to know. Not only is her book kid-friendly, but adults and teens can really benefit from the information she gives… I even learned a thing or two! I highly recommend this book because of it’s interesting content, accessibility, and the ease with which you can follow the stories. A must have for every household!

My Body Belongs to Me (
Book)
My Body Belongs to Me speaks to children- it makes them aware that when i comes to their bodies, there are boundaries. It assures them that it's OK to tell a parent or teacher if someone touches their "private parts." Children will respond to the rhyming text and bright illustrations. Parents and educators will find it a vial tool to initiate a lifesaving dialogue.
REVIEW: Jill portrays this very difficult subject in a way that kids will respond to easily and they will understand. The rhyming in the book is very appealing, especially to a child, and putting this important subject into a children's storybook form will encourage kids to feel comfortable discussing the topic. Jill has portrayed this topic in such a way that kids will feel comfortable telling their parents and/or teachers, if they were abused. This is a really great book for your children to read, especially when they are very young!

A Thousand Splendid Nights (
Book)
By Khaled Hosseini
After Khaled Hosseini’s trip to Kabul in the spring of 2003, he felt the need to capture the collective spirit of the women of Afghanistan. In an effort to do this, he produced the compelling best seller, A Thousand Splendid Suns. The novel follows the lives of two women, Mariam, a poor villager, and Laila, the educated daughter of a school teacher. Taking place from pre to post Taliban rule, the influence of politics seems to drive the novel tremendously. Into the Taliban rule and Soviet invasion, the story of Miriam and Laila exhibits the way in which tragedy and faith keep these women linked. As their country experiences political turmoil, the reader witnesses the sacrifice and courage that two women undergo in order to survive a deathly situation. A tear provoking read, you’ll be extremely enlightened and touched.

Thousands of books have been published about it but this book got Oprah's attention. A personal account of the Holocaust, Ellie Weisel’s "Night" captures the innocence, bravery and strength of a young teenage boy as he witnesses one of history’s greatest genocides. After being dragged from death camp to death camp, the young boy is plagued with questions of his own faith and thus parallels this life changing journey with a spiritual one. "Night" exhibits how inhumane acts can snatch away one’s childhood, never returning their innocence.

It's easy to see why this movie was nominated for 5 Academy Awards - with star power like Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jeniffer Connelly packing solid performances. This gritty story has DiCaprio is diamond smuggling mercenary who helps fuel the conflict diamond civil wars. This movie is tough for parents, who see children drugged up forced to kill thousands of innocent people.
DiCaprio plays Danny Archer, a white South African who learns about a huge diamond found by a fisherman, Solomon Vandy. Archer hears the story in jail, and in the hopes of getting his hands on the diamond springs Vandy from prision. He works with Vandy to help retrieve Vandy's family from a detention center and his son who has become one of the druged up vigilantes. Drawn into this web of exploitation is journalist Maddy Bowen played by Jennifer Connelly who agrees to help if Archer will tell her the details of how conflict diamonds make their way into the hands of the corporations who sell them to the Western world.

Flags of Our Fathers (
DVD)
The 2006 film directed by Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood was based on the book “Flags of our Fathers” by James Bradley. The film divulges the details of the famous photograph taken during World War II of five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American Flag. The film stars Ryan Phillippe as “Doc”, one of the surviving marines, and Paul Walker as Hank Hansen. Flags of Our Fathers answers the questions about the Battle of Iwo Jima, and the true meaning behind the famous photograph taken there.
Synopsis: February 1945. Even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The inspiring photo capturing that moment became a symbol of victory to a nation that had grown weary of war and made instant heroes of the six American soldiers at the base of the flag, some of whom would die soon after, never knowing that they had been immortalized. But the surviving flag raisers had no interest in being held up as symbols and did not consider themselves heroes; they wanted only to stay on the front with their brothers in arms who were fighting and dying without fanfare or glory. ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ is based on the bestselling book by James Bradley with Ron Powers, which chronicled the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the flag raisers and some of their brothers in Easy Company.
Our father-of-three reviewer is a big fan of military movies and thought this was great. He had throught that the cinematography was excellent. He felt that it was really a remarkable film that is really worth taking the time to watch.

Finding Oprah’s Roots, Finding Your Own (
DVD)
According to our mom-reviewer this DVD "is very helpful and informative especially if you are interested in building your own family tree." "This DVD is based on the book, and created by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. a scholar and educator who heads Harvard's Afro-American Studies program. Gates guides you through the process of creating your own family history in this DVD. Designed with African American's in mind it also features the TV personality Oprah Winfrey. One of the interesting features in this DVD is the story of Winfrey's great-great-grandfather Constantine Winfrey, a former slave. It's quite amazing - as are the stories of her maternal grandmother, educator Amanda Winters. This DVD is a particulary helpful if you are interested in learning more about the history of the African American people."
Bingo Motown Hits & Beatles CDs for Kids (
Music)
These are actually great CDs for both kids and adults. The songs are all oldies that parents will love, but they all the songs are sung by children which is great, because as the hit TV Show American Idol can attest to, kids love hearing other kids sing! Very fun songs to sing along to, especially for long road trips. Some favorites are For Once in My Life, You Can't Hurry Love, Rockin' Robin and Ain't No Mountain High Enough. Great CDs for introducing kids to the classics that they hopefully will continue to appreciate as they age.
Another really nice thing about the music from Bingo Records is that they are local fathers from Philadelphia. Their company is based on the premise that parents and children should enjoy and share the experience of listening to music together. Their mantra "Don't Feed Kids Junk Music!" is a great one! They have kids too and after hours of long car rides decided to start a record company that produced music that kids of all ages would enjoy! So let's hear it for these great Dads on the Move!
Walt Disney's Legacy DVD Collections (
DVD)
Volume 1: True Life Adventures
Thes documentaries were first released in the '50s and were as great then as they are today. These scientific film contain footage that may not even exist anymore. Kids loved watching the animals, a trip to Alaska, migrating caribou and more! The disc includes "Beaver Valley", "Water Worlds," and more.
Volume 2: This DVD is incredibly beautiful to watch and brings back memories of Sunday night movies when we were kids. In the current age of SpongeBob and Power Rangers, it's nice to have a video that everyone in the family can enjoy. Granted, all the stories are not real but the cinematography is breathtaking and the stories are interesting. Our 5-year-old reviewer particularly liked the exotic flowers footage as well as the "moving rocks" in the desert but he oohed and aahed throughout all the stories and kept pointing out cool things to his baby brother so we knew this was a winner right away. We definitely recommend adding this to your Disney collection.
The complete series includes: Wonders of the World, Lands of Exploration, Creatures of the Wild and Nature's Mysteries.

Someday by Alison McGhee (
Book)
How we love this book. First, be forewarned if you are the slightest bit emotional you will feel like crying when you read this. This is possibly the most perfect Mother's/Grandmother's day book out there. Never have we read anything that so simply sums up what it means to be a mother. Peter Reynolds was the author/illustrator for two of our favorite books including "The Dot" and "Ish" and this collaboration is truly special. If you are looking for one book to buy make this one it! It captures so simply the love between a mother and child and reminds you to make every second count -- because soon it will be a "someday."
Charlotte's Web (
DVD)
Based on the classic book by E.B. White, this latest version is a live-action adventure featuring many famous voices, and a very talented girl - Dakota Fanning. It's a story about friendship, miracles, life and death. It's rated G, but does have some older themes, including natural death as well as the slaughtering of pigs. Wilbur, the run of the litter is destined to become bacon... but he is saved by two compassionate friends. Fern (Dakota Fanning) is the young girl who claims him as her pet, and Charlotte, the spider (Julia Roberts) is the web-weaver who helps impress adults and saves Wilbur’s life. Some of the other characters have equally famous voices including two cows (Kathy Bates and Reba McEntire), a pair of geese (Oprah Winfrey and Cedric the Entertainer), a horse (Robert Redford), and Templeton the rat (Steve Buscemi). The captures the original story well, while mixing in a good sense of humor.
Moms - you may have to be prepared to discuss the cycle of life, and if your kids afraid of spiders you might want to wait, but for most this is a great story that all will enjoy!

Deep Sea IMAX (
DVD)
This incredible ocean adventure, filmed by Howard Hall and narrated by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet lets you see many of the most exotic sea creatures. We watched this in High Definition, which makes each scene even more amazing. Although the film is short, just 41 minutes, it's packed with stories and images that will keep kids amazed. Watching the giant jelly fish swim, eels or sharks is truly breathtaking and a great opportunity for kids to get a close up view of these amazing undersea creatures. It's rated G and great for kids of all ages.
Happy Feet (
DVD)
If your children like animated features they'll love Happy Feet. Our reviewers haven't stopped dancing since they saw this movie. The story is set in Antarctica where the Emperor Penguins each express their love with a "heartsong". It's a song that expresses who they are, unfortunately for Mumble (the misfit) he can't sing - but, boy can he dance! He can tap dance amazingly, unfortunately the leaders of the colony don't see the magic in his dance and they believe that he is why they can't find food. Mumble and his friends set out to find out the real reason why they can't find food. There are a few scary scenes that you'll want to keep in mind, mostly with the leopard seals and there are some chase scenes - but overall nothing too scary. The characters from Latin inspired penguins, to an African-American-type penguin add some fun diversity. Parents can use this as an opportunity to discuss how to accept each person's unique qualities. If all else fails you can just dance to the great music! Our favorite song is the Britney Murphy version of "Somebody to Love" by Queen.
Casino Royale (
DVD)
This action packed James Bond, played by sexy Daniel Craig has 007 pitted Le Chiffre a banker who funds the world's terrorist organizations. This 007 is much grittier. His first mission takes him to Uganda to spy on a terrorist, Mollaka. After this goes wrong, he goes against MI6 and works to track down the rest of the terrorist cells. He winds up in the Bahamas, and it is there that he encounters Dimitrios and, Solange his gorgeous girlfriend. He learns that Dimitrios is involved with Le Chiffre. 007 and a Secret Service agent being playing high-stakes poker in Montenegro at Le Casino Royale against Le Chiffre. The thought is that they will win all the money and it will destroy the terrorist funding. As usual there is murder, sex and in this one some stunning torture. It's rated PG-13 but this is definitely not for kids. The torture scene will have men squirming. Daniel Craig is great as Bond. He's smart, sexy and this movie comes without the sterotypical sexism. It's definitely worth the time to watch!
Peter Pan - 2 Disc DVD (
DVD)
Finally, on 2-Disc DVD Peter Pan has arrived. All the magic of Neverland, Peter, the Darling children, The Lost Boys, Captain Hook and his pirates, and “Tic Toc” Croc. This timeless movie has been thoroughly enjoyed by our kid-reviewers and their parents. Although all are fans of "Pirates of the Caribbean" this great tale isn't quite as scary. It has great music, including one new song, both picture and sound have been digitally enhanced so the picture is fantastic. The DVD also includes includes "In Walt's Words: Why I Made Peter Pan", the making-of featurette "You Can Fly", as well as a sneak peek at the upcoming movie Tinker Bell. There are some other great bonus features that the kids will also really enjoy - like flying over London. Kids old and young will enjoy this movie!
Super-Completely and Totally the Messiest by Judith Viorst (
Book)
Fans of the ever-popular Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day will love Judith Viorst's newest book. It is a story told by a little girl named Olivia (self described as "nearly perfect") who accurately describes her younger sister Sophie as the MESSIEST kid in the whole entire world. Everything Sophie does ends up a huge mess from making sand-castles to going trick-or-treating or taking a bath. When Olivia tries to help Sophie make breakfast in bed for their mother everything is going perfect until Sophie gets so excited that things were going so well that she jumps up and down on the bed causing all the dishes to end up in a big mess all over the room. A delightful story sure to be appreciated by any child with an exuberant sibling.
Veronica by Roger Duvoisin (
Book)
Many of you will recognize the illustration on the front of this book but may not be able to place him right away. Roger Duvoisin was cover illustrator for New Yorker magazine for a number of years and he brings this picture book to life with his distinctive style. Veronica is a hippo who wants to be conspicious. She lives with all her family and friends who all look exactly the same and since she also wants to become famous she runs away to the big city. Well as you can imagine, she is very conspicuous in the big city and after a day of adventure lands herself in jail. Thankfully, a compassionate woman rescues her and returns her to her original home where she is now very famous for her escape and lives to tell the other hippo of her adventures. A very funny story that is great for little kids' imaginations and teaches children to be happy with who they are.

Charlie & Lola: Volume 1 (
DVD)
Charlie and Lola is a wonderful British children's series shown on the Disney channel. Charlie is the older brother of Lola a precocious little sister who is very cute and very smart. Charlie is Lola's favorite person in the universe and he spends most of his time creatively helping the ever-curious Lola. He uses his imagination to come up with all sorts of explanations, remedies and time-passing solutions to Lola's antics and they get along wonderfully. Our tester's favorite episode is I Don't Like Tomatoes where Lola lists a bunch of foods she doesn't like to eat and Charlie figures out a way to get her to eat almost everything she says she doesn't like. Beautifully animated with good storylines and promotes healthy relationships between siblings. Highly recommend.

A Million Dots (
Book)
Written by Andrew Clements
This is a fabulous book for reluctant readers, kids who love facts, and parents who want a book that is different. The book begins and ends with a single dot and covers 999,998 so in the end you've seen 1 million dots. Each page has fascinating information. For example, did you know that in order to eat 675,000 Hershey's bars, you would have to eat one bar every two minutes, nonstop, for more than 234 days! We also had a blast trying to find the dot that represents the fact - some are rather hard to find. It's a great book that will keep everyone entertained!
Hoot (
DVD)
Based on the best selling children's book by Carl Hiaasen, Hoot is the story of three kids in Florida and how they take it into their own hands to save a population of endangered burrowing owls. When the kids discover that the new construction of a pancake house is right in the owls territory the kids take on the crooked politicians, a bumbling cop, played by Luke Wilson and even Jimmy Buffet (whose music is featured). This environmentally conscious film is good for all family members. It's fun, entertaining and wholesome!

Happiness Sold Separately $26.98 (
Audio Book)
by Lolly Winston and narrated by Melinda Wade
This is the second book by Lolly Winston. This story finds another young woman, Elinor Mackey at a changing point in her life. Her marriage to Ted Mackey begins to fall apart when she discovers that he is having an affair with Gina, his personal trainer. This all comes after years of trying (without success) to get pregnant.
Ted is torn, he is very much in love with both women. He has also taken on the position of role model for Gina's son, Toby, whom he adores. Ted appears to be the only stable male figure that Toby has ever met.
After Elinor discovers the affair, she confronts Ted by inviting Gina (her friend from the gym) to dinner. Ted quickly ends the affair but remains torn. Realizing that she too is confused, Elinor decides that she and Ted should separate. During this time Ted resumes his relationship with Gina and Elinor dates Noah the hot, but dull tree surgeon. Neither is sure if infidelity or infertility should end their marriage.
When Elinor once again finds herself pregnant she and Ted reunite, but will this be forever? Will she have a baby, and husband and a happy ever after? You'll have to listen to find out.
As with Lolly Winston's first book, Good Grief, the characters are real. The characters easy to identify with as they have bumps and curves in their marriage. It's a fun, no-nonsense look at life and love.

All About John Deere - Part IV (
DVD)
"Any child who loves "diggers" will LOVE this DVD," reports our mother of three. "We happen to have a son who loves trucks & tractors so needless to say this DVD is a part of our daily routine now. The footage and language is perfect for small children. The movie bops along with catchy songs as your child is able to see tons of John Deere vehicles up close and personal"
Cars $29.99 (
DVD)
Cars shines brighter then the wax applied to its characters' NASCAR
counterparts! Many of our kid reviewers saw this in the movie theaters and
loved it. Now that it's out on DVD, it's an at-home treat that kids can
watch again and again. The kids just think it's funny: From Lightning
McQueen's snowboarder moves to the tractor-tipping in the fields, everything
about this movie makes them crack up. The parents enjoy the little
subtleties that the kids just don't get — like the fact that one of the
racecar sponsors is htB (hostile takeover bank), and the appearance by
"Click and Clack" from "Car Talk." It's these little things that make this
movie a treat for all.
The storyline is fairly simple. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is
the over-confident rookie who thinks he's won the Piston Cup only to find
it's a three-way tie. To McQueen's shock, the winner is to be determined at
a tie-breaker race in California. On the way to California, he gets stranded
in Radiator Springs, a sleepy town on the old Route 66. There he meets Sally
Carrera, a hot Porsche (Bonnie Hunt); Mater, a tow truck (Larry the Cable
Guy); and Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and finds everything he's been missing.
The movie features great music by Rascal Flatts, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer,
James Taylor, and more. The DVD has some fun extras, too, including deleted
scenes, sneak peeks, and a couple of shorts.
Brother Bear 2 (
DVD)
My kids were fans of Brother Bear, so they were thrilled to review Brother Bear 2, and they weren't disappointed. This second film features Patrick Dempsey as Kenai, Jeremy Suarez as Koda and introduces Mandy Moore as as Nita, Wendie Malick as Aunt Siqiniq and the Wanda Sykes as wise-cracking and wisdom-filled, Innoko. Back are the favorite moose Rutt and Tuke played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.
The story is another one of friendship and love -- brotherly love between Kenai and Koda, and the love between Kenai and his old friend Nita. In order to marry, Nita is forced to destroy an amulet that Kenai gave her. She must not just destroy it, she must it at the Equinox with Kenai there. Yes, the spirits are intervening - again -- so watch it and see what happens. It's a nice DVD that the kids and parents will enjoy together. Rated G -- reviewed by Katrina, mother of 3.
The Little Mermaid (Platinum Edition) (
DVD)
Of all the recent Disney movies this one is probably most likely to be a classic like Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Snow White. As a mother, I like the fact that the Disney Villain -- this time the sea witch Ursula isn't quite as awful as the Queen in Snow White who demands Snow White's heart in a box! The Little Mermaid is a story of forbidden love... Ariel (the mermaid) falls in love with Eric (the human). Her father doesn't want her to meet humans, but of course she disobeys. The movie has great characters including a Sebastian the singing hermit crab, a Flounder her fish friend and a crazy seagull, Scuttle played by Buddy Hackett.
The music and songs are great thanks to Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. It includes favorites like "Kiss the Girl", "Under the Sea", "Les Poissons" and my favorite "Poor Unfortunate Souls". This platinum release of "The Little Mermaid" is packed with wonderful documentaries about the making of the little film, the expected deleted scenes, and some fun games and activities. It also includes the video remake of "Kiss The Girl" by Ashley Tisdale of "The Suite Life Of Zack and Cody."
This movie will make every little girl (and their mother) sing along. It's a great, timeless story that will be watched for years. The platinum edition is beautifully restored and all the bonus features make it really worthwhile. Rated G
100 Promises to My Baby (
Book)
When I read the first few pages of this book, I thought to myself that I had come across, finally, a book that goes further than a how-to baby book in the physical sense.
I also have to admit that what hooked me in the beginning was the quote from Tagore, opposite the contents page. "Every child is born proof that God has not given up on human beings." That is a quote I have always repeated to myself all through my life and all through the hectic times of our present-day history.
We take our baby raising tasks as if our babies are objects and they should be handled in a certain way. We always forget that there is a person inside that tiny being, and more importantly, that person has a soul. In contrast, Mallika Chopra's book raises our understanding of having children to a higher level, to the level of the soul, by reflecting her deep awareness of the responsibilities of becoming a mother.
The author, who has a physician's training, started writing this book when she was expecting her first child. In the introduction of the book she says she wanted to bond with her baby early on and started making her promises as a mother. Thus, this book was born out of the author's pledge to her baby so the baby could fulfill her potential and her purpose in life.
The author may have addressed the mothers, but fathers, too, can benefit greatly from this book. In close inspection, the book does not only relate the author's personal stories and commitment, but also, it influences mothers as well as fathers everywhere to think about their roles as parents.
"100 Promises to My Baby" has about ten chapters with titles like values, purpose, love, miracles, spirit, lessons, and traditions. With love and compassion as its highest goal, the book is interspersed with poetry, like that of Khalil Gibran, quotes from the Bhagavad Gita, definitions, and at the end of each chapter, some very precious reflections.
What I liked about the book was the charming style of telling personal stories. I believe, in a book, almost any reader looks for the personal touch or for anything of human interest, and here, that human interest gives this book its true depth.
The author, Mallika Chopra, is daughter of Deepak Chopra and mother of two children. A partner in Chopra Media and in the K Lounge in New York City, she is an author and producer with a medical school background. Her book, "100 Promises to My Baby" is a gift to mankind that will never go out of style.

My Precious One $15.00 (

The latest CD by Miss Amy is a delightful compliation of lullabies that were inspired by her personal experience as a mother of a premature baby. She created this great collection of songs that both parents and kids will enjoy. We found them particularly soothing for those much needed "chill out" parts of the day. Our mom-reviewer commented, "it's also a great CD to drive to! My 8-month-old daughter to really likes them too!" Saving Shiloh (
DVD)
Based on the books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's book Shiloh, this book continues the Shiloh saga. "Saving Shiloh," draws the story of Marty, Shiloh, and Judd to a conclusion that brings the story full circle.
Saving Shiloh is a nice film about coming of age that the whole family can watch and enjoy together. Set in the Midwest it is about a 12-year-old boy named Marty, his family and his beagle, Shiloh. It explores various relationships that surround this boy's life and family.
Marty, a 6th grader decides wants to believe that Judd Travers, Shiloh's former owner has changed from his dog beating, drinking and violent ways. Although there appears to be no good in this man, Marty believe's it's there and hopes if he hasn't he can change him. Particularly poignant is his relationship with his Grandmother, who appears to be suffering from Alzheimers. The movie has some good life lessons that will encourage family discussion. The children actors are surprisingly good, which makes this movie really worth watching. -- reviewed by Katrina, mother of three.
The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America (
Book)
by Eric Larson.
This is a historical account of a period in Chicago around 1893 when two men with different agendas were both striving in two different worlds. A brilliant architect helping america establish a place in the world by designing the World Fair and trying to outdo Paris's fair by making the fair in Chicago much more impresive, and the first known serial killer in the united states who used the fair to lure his victims, according to the newspaper accounts of that period it is believed that the serial killer murdered more than 200 people before he was arrested. I found the book incredibly interesting from a historical aspect. It is really well written. - reviewed by Jan, mother of three.

This CD rocks! Every Friday night we dance in our living room before dinner and my little one loves this CD. All I have to do is pop on The Cool Crooners of Bulawayo and my 22 month old starts spinning and bopping and running around. He even tries to reach up the stereo to turn up the volume. The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Jamabalaya Cajun band and others contribute to the irresistible rhythm of this CD's upbeat tunes. Pop it in and you will see that adults and kids alike will find it impossible to sit still! This is one CD that you can take on a road trip that the whole family will enjoy. - Reviewed by Diana (mother of two)

Judge & Jury (
Audio Book)
Narrated by Joe Mantegna this is the story of an FBI agent Nick Pellisante who is closing in on the mob boss Dominic Cavello. When jury duty is called for the Mafia Don's trial, Andie Echeverra, a part-time actress and a single, full-time mom, tries to get out of the trial, but is ultimately assigned as Juror #11. As expected nothing with the trial goes correctly and the story develops into a fast paced thriller. The story is intriguing, and a great listen. It's another James Patterson winner.
The Kite Runner $39.99 (
Audio Book)
by Kahled Hosseini
We were lucky enough to review this title on a Playaway Digital Audio Book. The book "The Kite Runner" follows the story of Amir, the son of a wealthy businessman, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. The story begins with the differences, yet strong bond that the two boys share. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend their days running kites and telling stories until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. It's an amazing story that won't soon be forgotten. It's a must read - or in this case a must listen! This book is read beautifully by the author.
Playaway Digial is a great new product. It's your favorite book in a lightweight player that has eight simple buttons. You can use the enclosed lanyard and wear it around your neck or stick it in your pocket. I listened to this book during daily walks with my dog. The Playaway comes already loaded with is packaged with earphones, a lanyard, and a standard AAA battery to allow for immediate listening. Half the size of a deck of cards, Playaway is perfect for people who enjoy hearing books come to life. Jogging, biking, laying by the pool, gardening or commuting to work.

Bear Snores On (
DVD)
You know how sometimes you fall in love with a book and then it is made into a movie and the movie is never as good as the book? Well, with the Scholastic Books on DVD series, that NEVER happens. For anyone who has ever read a Scholastic Book to their child they will love these DVDs. Our mother of two tester reports, "we already have a number of these videos and my son loves all of them. The Bear Snores On has been one of my son's favorite books for a while and the video is absolutely wonderful. The videos bring the stories to life in a way that makes the children want to watch the story again and again and still want to read the book that very same night! Come on, Rain! is also a favorite and the graphics are beautiful.
The Wheels on the Bus (
DVD)
The Wheels on the Bus is a great rendition of the classic book by Paul Zelinsky. Our mom tester reports, "even my 22 month old (who doesn't usually enjoy watching any television shows) was enraptured by this video. He did his baby sign for "more" as soon as it was over and my older son enjoyed the other three stories (Dem Bones, Over in the Meadow & I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly). Not only did my four year old request that we watch these videos again but wanted to sing the songs in the car."
Mary Mary (
Audio Book)
The James Patterson thriller once again features Alex Cross, the Washington DC detective turned FBI agent. When an A-list actress, Antonia Schifman, is murdered, her face cut up Alex Cross is brought in to help. He realizes that this isn't random that it's the work of a serial killer and soon emails come in from a Mary Smith claiming responsibility. The story has some good twists and turns, a bit of romance, and a custody issue with his son Alex (Ali). I've always liked narration of Peter J. Fernandez. The book is an entertaining thriller and fans of James Patterson will enjoy it.
The Camel Club (
Audio Book)
I recently listened to the unabridged version of The Camel Club by David Baldacci. This book takes readers inside the Beltway in Washington, DC as four unlikely misfits Oliver Stone, Caleb Shaw, Reuben Rhodes, and Milton Farb struggle not only to survive, but to save their president and their country from a plot that will lead to nuclear disaster. It took a while to get into the book because there were a lot of names and many subplots which all came together as the story unfolded. It was very entertaining and really held my attention all the way through to the end, there were some very exciting moments in the book which made me want to keep listening and I drove around just to keep listening. The only criticism of the story is that there was a little bit of political preaching. - Reviewed by Janet, mother of three.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (

I'm a huge fan of Harry Potter. I have listened to each story on CD and I'm not embarrassed to say I'm one of those people who can't wait for the next book to come out -- and hire a babysitter so I can see the movie when it hits the theatre. This movie does not disappoint, in fact, I think it's one of the best yet. This Harry Potter is by far the darkest, but I think the best yet. When Harry Potter's name emerges from the Goblet of Fire, he becomes a competitor in a grueling battle for glory among three wizarding schools - the Triwizard Tournament. But since Harry never submitted his name for the Tournament, who did? Now Harry must confront a deadly dragon, fierce water demons and an enchanted maze only to find himself in the cruel grasp of He Who Must Not Be Named. In this fourth film adaptation of J.K.
